Sports facility planned for former warehouse BY GRACE CABELL A sports and recreation facility is planned for the former Foodstuffs South Island warehouse on Main North Rd. The warehouse forms part of the former Foodstuffs South Island distribution centre, which opened in 1971. The warehouse area where the sports facility will go is

17,200 sq m – equivalent to two and a half rugby fields. A deputation from the developers was made to the ShirleyPapanui Community Board at its meeting last week on Wednesday, April 1. Community board deputy chairman Aaron Keown said the project sounded fantastic. “If it didn’t go ahead it would be a loss. This is a big win for

the area. “It’s miles better having a sport and recreation hub going in rather than a manufacturer. They [the developers] own the building and land at the back end of the site, but all of the front Main North Rd brick area is still for lease. “It’s a massive warehouse back there,” he said. •Turn to page 2

Two Cotswold pupils have rolled up their sleeves and See worked as caretakers at the Inside: school for a day. Zoey Pratley, 7, and Charlize Miller, 10, were selected by their teachers to take on the role as caretakers after their names were drawn from a school wide draw to win. More than 40 names were put forward for this draw, and See Zoey and Charlize were the Inside: lucky winners. The girls took over from the school’s caretaker, Wayne Major, who has recently celebrated his 62nd birthday. Mr Major has been a caretaker at the school for the last 21 years. The first job on the list was to untangle the very long school hose, which had become a bit of a mess. Next Zoey and Charlize put out all the school rubbish bins for the 550 students. Then the new caretakers visited each classroom to see if there were any jobs they could do. Room 8 needed its umbrella fixing so that was done straight away. A few other jobs were added to the list to complete after lunch.

It’s made with walls of pre-cast concrete and steel, with long-run metal roofing. Foodstuffs South Island, which used to host the space, has recently opened a $45m distribution centre in Hornby. The new 25,000 sq m building distribution centre situated on Shands Rd and Main South Rd is nearly double the size of the Papanui centre.

MOVE OVER: Cotswold pupils Zoey Pratley, 7, and Charlize Miller, 10, took over from Wayne Major as the school’s caretakers for the day. Then it was tree trimming time. “We got to ride in the trailer,” said Zoey. The trees were pruned to allow their friends to play on the playground without overhanging branches getting in the way. For lunch the girls and Mr

Major left the school to go to La Porchetta. Charlize said was looking forward to re-painting the front school gate fence after lunch. She would like to paint the fence her favourite colour purple, but had to settle for re-painting the same silver colour.

New entrant Dakota Rodgers Green has started at Our Lady of Fatima School. •Has your child recently started school? Send your photos to grace.cabell@starmedia.kiwi

Mattress fire

A mattress was set alight on the fourth floor of the vandalised, vacant Four Seasons Hotel on Papanui Rd last Tuesday. Fire communications officer Brent Dunn said the fire was extinguished by the hotel’s sprinkler system before two Christchurch city fire crews arrived. Police are treating the fire as suspicious.

OPEN: Medbury School head boy Dominic Edmond and the school’s youngest pupil Bohdan Nicholas cut the ribbon to officially open the new and improved Medbury Green last week. New positions for cricket, rugby and football fields have been created to enhance the school’s profile for hosting sports fixtures. Other work included re-levelling the green and improving drainage and irrigation to improve the playing surface for year-round sports. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN

Worry deepens over road plan BY GRACE CABELL St Albans residents’ worries over the Northern Arterial project are rising. The Northern Arterial project includes the widening of QE II Drive to four lanes between Main North and Innes roads, and a new section of four-lane road to connect the Northern Arterial to Cranford St. The proposal has angered St Albans residents, who say the project will have a huge effect on residential streets. The next step in the project is for the city council to approve changes to plans for the realignment of Ka-

3

putone Creek, in Belfast. The original proposal for the project included two 100m long, 4m wide culverts to carry the motorway over the Kaputone Creek in two locations. With an eastward realignment of the motorway proposed, Kaputone Creek will need to be realigned. The city council says the creek realignment is not happening as a result of the road project. However, Shirley-Papanui Community Board members disagree. “This was not within the powers given to the board. The creek realigning is purely for the Northern Arterial, instead of having massive culverts realign it,” said member

Joanne Byrne. She said the community board would not be able to stop the project. Board chairman Mike Davidson said he still had major concerns for the project. “It’s a bit concerning the creek realignment is happening because of the Northern Arterial. The project is being pushed by the Government to go into QE II Drive, and is forcing the hands of the city council to put in an extension from there. “We’ve seen the figures of 50,000 cars travelling down that road a day, and by the time it hits Bealey Ave it would drop to 11,000. But it seems out of whack to me to be such a big

drop. I’m really concerned with the whole project,” he said. The decision on whether the creek is to be realigned will be made by the city council this month. If this is approved, the project will be one step closer to going ahead. In November last year, more than 45 submissions were made opposing the project. Construction of the Northern Arterial is scheduled to start at the end of next year and construction would begin in December this year. It is expected to take three to three and a half years to build.

It may have rained on the last day of the Maadi Cup but nothing could dampen the spirits of Christchurch schools as they won bags of medals. St Margaret’s won the big one, the under-18 girls coxed eight beating Epsom Girls Grammar of Auckland by two seconds in the final. The Maadi Cup at Lake Karapiro, Cambridge, is the pinnacle of secondary schools rowing, and a springboard for the country’s future national representatives. After winning it in 2013 they finished third last year and have now regained the title. The eight was made up of Georgia Voice, Taylah Eder, Caroline Pearson, Millie Borren, Lily Marshall, Olivia Mendonca, Izzy Goddard, Star Davidson and cox, Grace Cocks. The school’s under-17 coxed eight and coxed four crews also bagged the gold medal. It was the third time in four years the under-17 four finished in top spot, this year beating out Nelson College by 1.25sec. The four was made up of girls who also won the under-18 eight, Star, Izzy, Millie, Georgia and cox Grace. St Margaret’s also walked away from Lake Karapiro with three silver medal wins in the under-18 coxless pair, under-16 coxed four and the under-15 coxed octuple sculls. The team captain, Olivia, was picked to take part in the New Zealand junior trials which start

on April 12 while Georgia, Izzy, Milie, Star, Saskia Klinkenberg and Grace were all selected for the South Island trials. St Andrew’s also had a historymaking event. The under-18 coxless pair of Sam Martel and Sam Robertson won the school’s first gold medal in a sweep oar event (non-sculling) in 32 years. They beat out the crew from Auckland’s Mt Albert Grammar School by 3.4sec. The pair were also selected as trialists for the national junior rowing team. The under-16 coxed four of Zack Rumble, Thomas Russel, Mitchell White, Ben Taylor and cox Angus Taggart secured the school’s other gold medal of the regatta. St Andrew’s also won a bronze medal in both the under-18 lightweight coxed four and the under-16 coxed eight. Rangi Ruru rounded off a successful regatta for schools from the nor’ west area. They won four medals including two golds. The under-15 coxed four of Samantha Wing, Claudia Reid, Jemima Bell, Isabella Carter and cox Harriet Green were not in contention at the halfway stage of the final but stormed home in the second kilometre to win by 1.29 seconds over Auckland’s Baradene College. Rangi’s under-15 coxed eight was the other golden crew again beating Baradene. The crew consisted of Claudia, Samantha, Jemima, Isabella, Sophie McCartin, Izzie Evans, Emma Stephens, Alice Sproat and cox Maisie Nattrass.

Girls’ High finished the regatta with seven medals including two golds. The under-18 coxless pair of Grace Shaw and Sophie Jackson powered home to take gold ahead of St Margaret’s and the under-18 lightweight coxed four of Rhiannon Mason, Paige and Taylor Waddington, Sara Buerki and cox Sarah Fitchett were also too good for Auckland’s Westlake Girls’ High School who finished second third. Sarah and Sophie were selected to trial for the South Island rowing team and Grace was picked for the national trials. Christ’s College picked up a medal of each colour with the gold medal going to the under-17 coxed eight. The eight was Cameron Smith, Monty Elworthy, Oscar Acland, Tom Darry, Rowan Taylor, Angus Gray, Luke Austin, Oliver Taylor and cox Daniel Harnett. The eight finished in a time of 5min 52.56sec, 2.35 seconds faster than Hamilton Boys’. The other medal-winning crews were the under-18 coxed eight with silver and the under-18 coxed four with bronze. Monty, Oliver, Oscar Rowan and Sam Tillman were all selected to attend the South Island team trials and jack Caulton was selected for the national trials. Boys’ High were unable to bring home a gold medal but still finished with two silvers and two bronze with Jack Lopas, Sean Youngman and Josh Rodger were selected for national and South Island team trials.

Almost there for playground h c t Wa Repairs BY GRACE CABELL

Almost half the funds have been raised toward building a playground in Merivale. The Merivale Reserve Playground Incorporation has raised $42,750 toward building an $85,000 playground in the area. The group is fronted by Merivale mother Charlotte Gray, who hopes to build the playground at the Merivale Reserve in Rugby St. She had decided to raise the

money herself after she was told in September last year there was no city council funding to install the playground. Once all the funds have been raised the playground installation will begin, and separated into two stages. The first stage will involve putting in the play equipment, soft fall area and the pathway through the middle of the playground, costing about $55,000. The community will be

involved in stage two, with planting where possible. Foodstuffs Community Trust and Fendalton New World have donated $5000, as have the Canterbury Community Trust. On the group’s Givealittle page, (an online fundraising site) $1375 has been raised. An anonymous $10,000 donation was also received. The $21,375 raised will be matched by the city council, and used to purchase play

equipment. This means the overall total would be $42,750. The group is also delivering 500 pamphlets to Merivale residents, to encourage them to donate to the Givealittle page. Applications have also been made to other foundations and trusts for which the group is awaiting responses. • Donations can be made at https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/ merivaleplayground/updates.

St Micheal’s Church School is joining forces with Selwyn House School to help donate to victims and their families in Vanuatu. The school decided to donate more than 4000 books and school journals after reading an article about the Selwyn House donations to Cyclone Pam victims in the Nor’West News. Parent library volunteer Chrystal Perelini sorted excess books from the school’s resource rooms that were surplus to the school’s requirements. More than 20 boxes of 230 journals would make their way to children in Vanuatu. These books were boxed up and added to Selwyn House’s shipment. Selwyn House assistant principal Juliana Rae said she was thrilled with the delivery. “It’s great knowing there is someone at the other end to ensure these goods are delivered to those who most need it,” she said. New home for autism support Autism New Zealand has moved into a new house in St Albans. The former manager’s house has been converted into part office space and the lounge/dining room serving as a family meeting area and library. Southern regional hub manager Craig Calder said the move into the Christchurch Park Complex is a major step forward for the group and families dealing with autism. “We were delighted to find the house at Christchurch Park, the access is ideal for the many families that visit us, with a large number of car parks and a safe secure setting, it is prefect for us,’’ said Mr Calder. He said the new premises was perfect for smaller support group meetings and as a training venue. “A real added bonus for us is that families can stay overnight in the motels,” he said. The four-office premises is situated in a garden setting, amongst the Christchurch Park Sporting Complex. The complex has been used by many sports teams over the years, including the All Blacks, the Black Caps, and the Crusaders. An official open home day was held on March 16. NOR’WEST NEWS ▌READERS’ ▌ LETTERS

Surely there are plans for this type of crossing already, as there are hundreds of them in Christchurch and thousands around New Zealand. Seriously I can’t see more than $2000 in this work, and at the most if someone is getting ripped off, $5000. The city council needs to get its act together and stop wasting ratepayers’ money. No wonder rates are rising at an alarming rate.

The Nor’West News asked its readers what they thought about a $50,000 pedestrian crossing proposal on Memorial Ave, near Fendalton Mall. Here are some of their responses • Owen Springford

What kind of cockroaches live under the rocks at the city council? The city is broke because it spends money like a drunken sailor. Half of the city’s roads look like ISIS has passed through and yet the city council spends truckloads of money on the only undamaged part of town. The money wasted on Ilam Rd, around Canterbury University beggars belief.

NEW: Autism New Zealand has moved into a new house in the Christchurch Park Complex, St Albans. Right: Autism New Zealand southern regional hub manager Craig Calder. professionals visited and viewed the new premises. “The demands on our support and educational services has steadily grown over the past two years, we are supporting and assisting more families now with information and resources about autism spectrum disorder. “Thanks to the support of grant funding from the Canterbury Community Trust we were able to make this move, we are delighted as an organisation,” he said.

• Les Bruce Regarding the cost of the project ($50,000) it is out of all proportion to the work needed to construct a safety zone. Regarding construction we’ve got a metre or so of concrete, some tiles, a steel safety hoop and two signs. Quite frankly I can see why my rates are increasing with such proposals. I am sure the money could be put to better use. I hope our community board members can see the folly of this project. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. • Would you like to have your say about the project? Email your response in 200 words or less to grace.cabell@starmedia. kiwi

• Lynne Moss My view is that if the need is there, do it if it will help to save lives and keep children safe. But $50,000 to make it is insane. Looking at the photo you published I see two slabs of concrete, a couple of metal signs and the yellow metal object plus a few painted lines.

Marshland School pupils get taste of trench warfare BY KYLE KNOWLES Marshland School pupils are learning about the history of World War 1 by digging up their school fields. Last week year 7 and 8 pupils dug a 10m trench in the field which gave them a real-life perspective of what it was like for soldiers fighting from trenches during World War 1. Student teacher Brittany Nixon was the person behind the

idea and said the children were so excited to be getting handson with their social studies and loved the idea of being able to incorporate class with digging the trench. The trench was about 1m wide and 1m deep which was decorated with poetry and artwork the pupils had done while learning about the history of the war. Ms Nixon said persuading the school to allow her class to dig up the school field was relatively

easy as the school is set for demolition and relocated to a new site on Prestons Rd. The children made sure they planned the trench before digging the real one. “We had a wee look at the structure and the equipment the soldiers would have had provided to them and how the trenches were built. The kids made mock trenches which gave them a rough idea how a trench would stay up.”

Ms Nixon said it was not only her class that was excited about the unusual classroom activity and her class wanted to get the whole school on board. “They were pretty excited and they were really keen to get other classes on board and getting the younger classes on board,” she said. The trench was expected to be there for a week after a community event held at the weekend.

The health effects of

sugar

Should we be alarmed or is this likely to be another area that science backtracks on?

T

he answer to that question is, yes, we should be worried. There are real problems caused by the volume of sugar being consumed by the average person and when we look back over the last decades, the problem is getting worse, not better. Developments in research and understanding the fields of nutrition and food safety change how we view products we consume, and patterns of consumption can make the negative effects of foods more pronounced. While these advances should be embraced as each development leads to better understanding and health outcomes, it can also be frustrating to the average consumer who can feel like just when they get a good healthy eating plan together, the rules change. The recommendations for sugar are a good example of how information can be confusing. Some sources encourage the complete ban on all sugar-containing products and others, such as the heart

foundation, recommend a reduction rather than complete removal. It’s not so confusing though, really. At no time in history has sugar ever been presented as a healthy food, but as in the past it took more effort to consume sugar so it was less of a problem, thus we could get away with it. In the past, sugar was something that you could control through how much you added in baking and to your cup of tea. This knowledge then transferred into the first generation of convenience food; if it was sweet, it had sugar in it. What we now face as a challenge is not that suddenly sugar is bad, but that it is added, often quietly, to many of the processed foods we consume even when they aren’t sweet. The availability and often reduced price of these foods compared to a healthier option make them an easy choice to the time-poor or uneducated consumer. There are some simple tips you can follow, including reading food labels, consuming as much food as possible in a state close

What we now face as a challenge is not that suddenly sugar is bad, but that it is added, often quietly, to many of the processed foods we consume even when they aren’t sweet. to its natural form and avoiding sugary drinks. Consumers also need to be aware of marketing claims that do not provide the full nutritional picture of a product. A sensible place to start is by combining a diet low in processed food and sugar combined with regular

activity as the path to long-term health. For more advice and direction to improve your health, talk to your registered exercise professional, they can offer some advice and are able to refer you to sources of information and other nutritional professionals that you can trust.

Bishopdale pre-school rebuild swings into action The first digger has arrived to begin the rebuild of Bishopdale Community Preschool. The school’s staff, pupils and families have been working toward the rebuild for two years. Following the February 2011 earthquake, the school was told it would be required to move to a temporary new home at Breens Intermediate School. Following this, the pre-school committee has been working with the Ministry of Education and the Breens school board to find a solution to allow the pre-school to continue to operate. After almost two years of fundraising, grant and loan applications, designing, engineering reports, and consents, the preschool is celebrating the arrival of the first digger on site to start the actual build. “We’re so happy to see the centre get back on a permanent footing through this new building project. “They provide a fantastic and much needed service for families in this area and have been really critical to keeping the children’s spirits high following the stress of the earthquake,” said parent Miriana Stanley. The pre-school has been supporting families for more than 35 years. “Everyone could see the enormous learning opportunities that had emerged for both the

The pre-school is continuing to raise funds to build the playground and have a Givealitte page that you can connect to via its website www.bishopdalepreschool.co.nz The rebuild is expected to continue through until spring this year. The centre will stay open in the temporary buildings during the project.

House of Travel Northlands has scooped up four top awards at the company’s annual ceremony. The travel centre was named the overall best performing outlet for 2014, top performing large-sized outlet of the year, best performing outlet for House of Travel product land South Island, and top House of Travel air outlet South Island. The team consists of Brigid Murphy, Courtney Cairns, Jessica Rogers, Karlie Benny, Carly Gerrard, Brigitta Moore, Stacey Mullinger, Sarah Bright, Cheryl Whitham, Rachael Kidney and Mark O’Donnell. Owner operator Stacey Mullinger says she is thrilled with the four awards won by her team and is excited their ongoing commitment to excellence has been recognised. “We are all so proud to have

won these awards, but we want to acknowledge our customers whose repeat business and loyalty has allowed us to achieve this success,” she said. “My team and I love what we do and are fortunate to work in an industry where we make our clients’ dreams become reality.” House of Travel chief executive Mark O’Donnell said he was proud of the Northlands store’s success. “Taking out the top honours in so many categories is a fantastic achievement. The team should be very proud that their experience and outstanding customer service has seen them recognised in this way.” The Northlands team received their awards at the company’s annual prize-giving in Wellington on Saturday, March 28.

they want before committing to treatment,” Jenny says, “but there are also clients who want to have a Botox™ treatment straight away and then go back to work.” She says appearance medicine treatments have improved considerably over the 20 years the clinic has been operating, and there are products and methods to suit all types of skin. The clinic also offers mole mapping, mole removal and primary skin cancer removal, while another key area of treatment is varicose vein removal. Two methods are offered – endovenous laser treatment and ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy. The clinic has relationships with several health insurance providers and clients may be covered for varicose vein treatment, providing it is included in their policy. Transform Appearance Clinic is discreetly located at 52a Mandeville Street. It is open Monday to Friday from 8.30am, with late nights on Tuesday and Thursday, and Saturday from 9am to 3pm. Phone 343 2880 to enquire about treatments or make an appointment.

oxing fans were out in force at Horncastle Arena on March 28 to attend the Rockstar Energy Drink Super 8 Redemption, featuring Brian “The Beast” Minto. Billed as the biggest lineup of professional boxers to ever visit Christchurch, the event was a fundraiser for the charity KidsCan as well as a display of world-class boxing. The action in the ring was quick and unforgiving as each bout of three rounds, each of three minutes’ duration, kept the crowd roaring for more. Shani White

It follows the announcement last week of Kaiapoi High School’s rebuild and repair programme, part of a $138 million expenditure approved by the Government for

Kaiapoi High School, Hornby High School, Banks Avenue School, Linwood College and Cashmere High School. Kaiapoi Borough School will benefit from a $5.5 million programme designed to deliver new teaching spaces and refurbishment of remaining facilities. Karanga Mai will undergo a redevelopment of existing facilities as part of the Kaiapoi High School redevelopment. Kaiapoi North School will benefit from a $5.6 million programme that will deliver new teaching spaces and include the demolition of old spaces and the refurbishment of remaining facilities, as well as weather tightness.

Woodend School will undergo redevelopment of existing facilities, including some new teaching spaces, with an estimated budget of $2.3 million. Construction for all of these projects will begin in February next year. “Our communities are benefiting by a $7 million grant towards the restoration of our earthquake-damaged facilities that has seen contributions towards our new Rangiora and Oxford town halls, and the Ruataniwha Kaiapoi Civic Centre, and now we can celebrate investment in our schools.” “Government is investing in Waimakariri,” said Mr Doocey.

CULPRIT: Burnt toast are some of the causes of accidental fire alarms.

Damned toast BY MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER Damned toast. Amongst the accidental fire alarms we go to there always seem to be a few that are caused by someone cooking their lunch. Not only do two fire trucks have to come but most commercial buildings with smoke detection systems have evacuation schemes that require the entire building to bail out and wait for the all clear from the responding fire crews. It happened seven times this week. Each time a guilty looking staff member, trying hard to be inconspicuous, would have been

skulking at the back of staff assembly. Damned toast. Daylight savings has just ended. It’ll be lighter in the mornings but the hour earlier for darkness is a reminder that winter is calling. We always try to get people to change batteries on their smoke alarms at daylight savings time. If you didn’t do this at the start please do it now. That’s because people like myself regularly go to fires where smoke alarms are found hanging from the ceiling, without any batteries in them. Or we go to fatal fires where alarms have not sounded, or are not present, or are down and stored in drawers.

These are the cases that frustrate us.

C. Place lamb in a large roasting dish with tomatoes and water. Cover and seal tightly with foil. Place in oven and cook for 30 minutes before reducing temperature to 150 deg C and continuing to roast for 2 to 3 hours or until lamb is extremely tender and falling from the bone. Remove lamb from oven and allow to cool before picking meat from the shoulder and discarding any bones and fat. Increase oven temperature to 200 deg C. Place lamb into a large heavy-based frying pan with jus and return to oven, basting oc-

casionally with jus. Heat 50ml of the olive oil in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium to high heat. Add gnocchi and cook one side until golden brown. Turn gnocchi over in the pan and place in the oven for 4 to 5 minutes. To make parsley oil, place parsley and salt into a mortar and grind to a smooth paste. Add remaining olive oil and muddle together. Remove gnocchi from oven and divide between 4 plates. Top with lamb and reduced juices. Finish with a drizzle of parsley oil and serve immediately.

Place brown sugar, cream, flour and butter in a small pot and bring to the boil over a medium heat. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. Unwrap pastry and slice thinly. Lay slices into a 28cm tart tin with a removable base and press to cover tin. Ensure pastry is evenly and thinly spread, about 2mm thick. Remove excess from edges. Whisk eggs and egg yolk in to the sugar mixture and pour into pastry-lined tin. Sprinkle with walnuts and bake for 10 minutes before reducing oven temperature to 175 deg C and cooking a further 30 minutes or until golden and just set. The entry criteria is open to all applicants over the age of 16 and is free. All you need is a pair of safety boots. hen a friend recommended Jonathan Milne’s book Go! The Art of Change to Anne Bannock, she then looked into studying at The Learning Connexion, the school of art and creativity, based in Wellington which Jonathan founded and directs. Anne realised that its study-from-home, part-time option suited her down to a tee. “My lifelong ambition was to go to an art school and to be part of the creative energy that goes with it,” says Anne. “To enter a new world of understanding modern art and new ideas.” Situated in picturesque Ngatimoti, Anne has made a studio retreat that caters to her creativity and to the public. “My studio is a converted cowshed which serves as my studio and gallery, and is open to the public in the summer.” The Advanced Diploma programme has been the best programme of study for Anne to follow, allowing her to discover new techniques and skills to add to her extensive creative repertoire. “Everyone I have met has been helpful, especially the tutors. More health benefits with

Don’t be trapped by gout It is not widely known that gout is a form of arthritis. But it is the second most common form of arthritis in the country.

G

out is caused by an excessive buildup of uric acid in the blood. The acid crystallises and results in joint inflammation. Unfortunately, there are a lot of harmful myths circulating about gout, such as that it is a disease of luxury, but these myths need to be dispelled immediately. There is no shame in getting gout. Thankfully, gout can generally be wellmanaged with effective medication and lifestyle changes. Arthritis New Zealand is hosting a number of gout workshops in Christchurch and surrounding districts in April and May that will help you learn to manage your gout better. To register or to find out more about these workshops, phone 0800 663 463. There is no cost to attend, but Arthritis New Zealand is always grateful for donations. Arthritis New Zealand is the national organisation focused on raising awareness of the more than 140 different forms of arthritis, advocating for those with the condition and providing advice and support. There are 578,000 New Zealanders living with arthritis.

ADVANCED OMEGA PC FISH OIL

t is well-known how important omega-3 fatty acids are to good health. It is estimated that most people don’t even get a third of the recommended omega-3 fatty acids on a weekly basis. Countries with higher amounts of omega-3 in their diet are known to have lower cardiovascular disease and in many cases, better overall health. Recent research has shown inflammation to be a big part of disease and ageing process. Fish oil can help reduce inflammation by providing essential fatty acids required by the body to heal itself and maintain good health. Fish oil supplements have become

O

hugely popular for this reason. Until now, most fish oils only contain omega-3 fatty acids in triglyceride form. Fish, however, naturally contain omega-3 in triglyceride and phospholipid form but until recently, the phospholipid form was lost due to the manufacturing process. GO Advanced Omega PC sets new standards in fish oil as it contains omega-3 attached to both triglycerides and phospholipids. Studies have shown GO Advanced Omega PC to be far better absorbed, leading to increased levels of vital omega-3 fatty acids in the organs thru giving the potential for more health benefits.

GO Advanced Omega PC is produced from fresh, wild, deep sea cold water fish using a new advanced and more natural cold extraction process that better preserves the natural nutrient profile found in fish. It is manufactured to high GMP (good manufacturing practice) standards and is molecularly distilled to remove any contaminants, toxins and heavy metals like mercury. For further information on this revolutionary new fish oil and how it may benefit you, phone Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy in New Brighton.

Do your joints ever hurt?

ur body has a padding called cartilage, a protective spongy coating between all moving bone surfaces. Cartilage allows the joints to move freely. However, it is easily worn away or damaged with activity but is normally being constantly rebuilt. If the replacement and repair of cartilage slows down, the moving bone surfaces become closer and may start scraping together. This can eventually cause joint inflammation, pain and reduced mobility. If it continues, the bone surfaces become rough and symptoms worsen. This process is called

wear and tear arthritis or osteoarthritis. Researchers have found certain nutrients may stimulate the body to produce more cartilage and also support the healing of connective tissue, ligaments, bone and muscle. GO Healthy New Zealand has developed a highly effective combination of nutrients to support all areas of joint health. The formula called GO Glucosamine 1-A-Day provides well-researched nutrients like glucosamine, chondroitin, proline, manganese and vitamin D3 to support the formation of cartilage, connective tissue,

ligaments, bone and muscle. It is known when the joints are inflamed, they can be very painful and this inflammation may also slow down the formation of new cartilage. For this reason, GO Glucosamine 1-A-Day also contains an effective blend of ginger, turmeric and celery to help reduce joint inflammation and pain. Inflammation may be further reduced by also taking a therapeutic amount of high purity fish oil or krill oil. For more information, contact Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy at 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton. Phone 388 5757.

Aspire Canterbury is a not-for-profit,communityfocused organisation committed to meeting the needs of older persons with mobility issues, Mobile Service disabled persons and their (03) 3666 189 0800 347 242 friends/whanau.

T

heir aim is to assist people in making informed decisions about accessing services or choosing products that will assist them in their daily lives. In 2015, they will be taking their services on the road and out into communities, meeting people in their environments to make daily living easier. Cantabrians, particularly the disabled and elderly, have become reluctant or unable to venture out from home since the earthquakes, meaning there has been a disconnection from the community and essential services. Aspire Mobile is a response to the need to reconnect, giving disabled people easier access to services and introducing them to new products which can make their lives more enjoyable and provide them with a sense of inclusion in the wider community.

Enviro Master for heat pumps

SMOOTH-AIR

PRODUCTS

I

f you are rebuilding or repairing your home, Enviro Master can offer you a complete solution to meet your individual heating, cooling and ventilation needs. Many housing companies offer a package deal and therefore may size or position your heat pump incorrectly. It is best to talk to the experts to tailor a solution that best suit your individual requirements. This can be done from your architectural plans or from a free in-home consultation. Enviro Master have been servicing the Christchurch area for over 12 years, and supplies, installs and services all the leading brands including Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi and Daikin. This means our team can show you which system and brand will best suit your needs. Heat pumps are known to be one of the most energy efficient forms of heating available. In addition to being able to provide up to 4.9kW of energy for every 1kW used, there are the added

27

benefits of cooling, dehumidifying and air filtration (great for people with allergies or asthma), benefits no other heating appliance can offer. Ducted and multisystems are becoming increasingly popular, providing climatecontrolled comfort throughout your home or workplace. We are also able to incorporate ventilation into ducted systems. For a free in-home consultation, call Enviro Master on 366 0525 or visit our showroom at 41A Shakespeare Road, Waltham, Christchurch.

We currently have a stock clearance on 2.5kW cooling/3.6kW heating systems starting as low as $1900 installed. These are ideal for a bedroom or office, and there are very limited numbers of these systems available. We also have savings up to $800 off the recommended retail price on selected models.

AT PROMOTIONAL PRICING!!!

To ensure the quality of your air, contact the experts. SmoothAir Products can calculate the required air exchange for your building requirement. Smooth-Air offers a wide range of ventilation equipment, from air vents to ducting for fans, for both the commercial and domestic markets. They have an extensive range of fans and ventilation components in-store, but they can also provide innovative solutions tailored to differing requirements.

Ventilation

T

his includes both the exchange of air to the outside as well as circulation of air within the building. It is one of the most important factors for maintaining acceptable indoor air quality in buildings. Filtered air supply for summer and filtered and warmed air in winter creates a healthy environment in which to live and work. In case of poor or insufficient air intake from outside, the oxygen content decreases, humidity and dustiness levels increase.

If exhaust ventilation is not provided or it is not effective, polluted air, smells, humidity and harmful substances are not removed. Low oxygen with high carbon dioxide causes stuffiness in the room and occupants can feel drowsy. Invisible harmful substances, like a high content of dust and tobacco smoke, are harmful and can cause various diseases. Even bad smells can cause discomfort or irritate the nervous system. In summer, it’s easy to open windows for cross ventilation, however as winter approaches, we start to shut out houses to trap in the heat and as a result, air quality can decline. It is therefore very important to ensure good air quality indoors through adequate ventilation.

Blues In Full Swing by Li'l Chuck The One Man Skiffle Machine

Blues in Full Swing' by Li'l Chuck the One Man Skiffle Machine is Out Now! itunes.apple.com/nz/album/ blues-in-full-swing

Genuine one man band Lil’l Chuck aka David Thorpe celebrates the launch of his new album, ‘Blues in Full Swing’ with a FREE show at The Wunderbar in Lyttelton, from 8pm next Thursday (9th April) with support Brendan Gregg. “The last few years have proven to many that you have to seize the moment, time waits for no-one,” said David. “Being a one-man band had been in my head too long and I had to start getting it down. If for nothing else than as a personal archive and love letter to my family.” David is a familiar local musician. Apart from his current project performing and recording as Li’l Chuck, he has been involved in numerous collaborations including the well known Black Velvet Band. According to David, his new album is lighthearted and full of foot tapping good times. Each song illustrates the essence of a one man band, with all of the instruments played and recorded simultaneously. “I’m blessed with the ability to perform by coordinating multiple instruments at one time. I am proof that men can indeed multitask!”
